Oleksandr Ryabko was born in Kiev, Ukraine, where he began his ballet training before continuing his studies at the Hamburg Ballet School under the direction of John Neumeier. He joined Hamburg Ballet in 1996 and quickly distinguished himself as a versatile and highly expressive artist, being promoted to Soloist in 1999 and Principal dancer in 2001.

Over the course of his career, he has established himself as one of the central artistic figures of Hamburg Ballet, performing leading roles in a wide range of works by John Neumeier. His repertoire includes the title role in Nijinsky, as well as major roles in Giselle, Lady of the Camellias, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Little Mermaid, Othello and Matthäus-Passion. Many of these roles were created specifically for him, forming a long-standing artistic collaboration that has significantly shaped some of the company’s most important productions.

His repertoire also includes works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Mats Ek and Jiří Kylián, demonstrating a strong ability to move seamlessly between classical, neoclassical and contemporary styles. His performances are recognised for their clarity, musicality and deep psychological interpretation, allowing him to bring complex characters to life with exceptional nuance.

His career has taken him to leading international stages and prestigious galas worldwide, including the World Ballet Festival in Tokyo, where he has appeared alongside many of the most renowned dancers of his generation. He has also collaborated with major international companies and artists, contributing to the global presence of Hamburg Ballet.

In addition to his stage work, he has been featured in numerous film and DVD productions, playing a key role in the documentation and international dissemination of Neumeier’s choreography. His artistic legacy is closely connected to the development of narrative ballet and the evolution of Hamburg Ballet’s repertoire.
