IRA GOLDBECHER.
Dramaturg
Ira Goldbecher studied Theatre Studies and English Literature at the universities of Leipzig and Leeds, building from the beginning a path shaped by language, performance, and cultural exchange. Early experiences in directing and dramaturgy took her to Blue Raincoat Theatre in Sligo and to Theater der Jungen Welt in Leipzig. Her master’s research focused on Theatre for Development and was accompanied by a research stay in Malawi, already pointing towards an interest in performance as a space of dialogue across cultures and social realities.
After completing her studies, she expanded this international perspective through work in cultural diplomacy and cultural management, with placements at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin and the Goethe-Institut in Seoul. From there, her path led into theatre practice more directly. Beginning with the 2010/2011 season, she worked as a dramaturgy assistant for opera, ballet, and concerts at Theater Plauen Zwickau, where she gained experience across multiple forms and began shaping a distinctive dramaturgical voice.
In the 2013/2014 season, she moved to Landestheater Linz, where her work deepened in dialogue with dance and music theatre, including her collaboration with dance director Mei Hong Lin. In 2017, she was awarded a four month residency at the Alice Boner Institute in Varanasi through the Goethe-Institut New Delhi / Max Mueller Bhavan. That period opened a more reflective and research based dimension within her work, shaped by questions of belonging, sound, memory, and otherness. It added another layer to a practice already grounded in theatre, but increasingly attentive to how artistic meaning is formed through encounter, listening, and cultural context.
Since the 2019/2020 season, Ira Goldbecher has been dramaturg for dance theatre at Staatstheater Braunschweig under the direction of Gregor Zöllig. Alongside this work, she has also appeared as a freelance dramaturg, including guest collaborations with Ballett Dortmund and with Argentine choreographer Damian Cortes Alberti in Linz.
