John Neumeier is an influential American choreographer, dancer, and former director of the Hamburg Ballet. He trained in the United States, Copenhagen, and at The Royal Ballet School in London before joining the Stuttgart Ballet in 1963, where he rose to become a soloist and emerging choreographer. In 1969, he became Director of Ballet Frankfurt, gaining attention for his innovative reinterpretations of classical works.

In 1973, Neumeier was appointed Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet, a position he held until 2024, transforming the company into one of Germany’s most respected and internationally recognised ballet institutions.

His choreographic range spans full length story ballets, symphonic works, notably to the music of Gustav Mahler, musicals, and pieces set to sacred music. Recent creations include The Sleeping Beauty (new version, 2021), Hamlet 21 (2021), Beethoven Project II (2021), and Dona Nobis Pacem (2022).

Neumeier founded the Hamburg Ballet School in 1978 and Germany’s National Youth Ballet in 2011, nurturing future generations of dancers. He has also created works for leading companies worldwide, including The Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and The National Ballet of Canada.

His honours include the Dance Magazine Award, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the French Order of Arts and Letters, the Kyoto Prize, the Prix Benois de la Danse for Lifetime Achievement, the Prix de Lausanne Lifetime Achievement Award, the Erich Fromm Prize, and the Medal of Honour Ingenio et arti from Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Neumeier also established the John Neumeier Foundation to preserve his extensive dance and ballet archives for public access and scholarship.
